Color Zen Kids (3DS eShop) Review written by SKTTR:

As the name suggests this is a kids version of the beautiful and unique puzzler Color Zen which was released just a few weeks ago on Wii U and 3DS.

For those who don't know, Color Zen and Color Zen Kids let you solve puzzles at your own pace: No highscores or time limits. Each stage consists of a stylish picture made of shapes in different colors. You can drag the pulsating shapes around the touchscreen to match other shapes of the same color. Upon doing so matching shapes fill up the background color and disappear. Goal is to clean up the screen of all shapes until only one color is left: the color of the border around the stage. It is a fresh concept that is very addicting.

Review: Color Zen Kids (3DS eshop) Medium15

While Color Zen was a great effort with 460 stages, special colors, special modes, and quite a few challenging puzzles that were worth the 2.99€ asking price, Color Zen Kids is stripped of all the innovative things you can do with the formula and gives you just 120 very simple (animal themed) stages that are really only recommended for young kids. Seasoned Color Zen players will beat these 120 stages in 30 minutes and wonder why it's over so soon.

The 3DS version has some technical limits: Due to the small file size the soundtrack is shorter, re-edited and you can hear the cuts in the short loops which is annoying, especially because the music was quite good. You won't hear much of the compressed music now anyway, as unlike the Wii U version this version will always stop the music after each stage and then start over in the next stage which is grating because most stages are 5-10 seconds long. The graphics don't look as crisp as on Wii U either and there's no 3D effect at all, so for the best and most zen-like experience you want to get the Wii U version.

Review: Color Zen Kids (3DS eshop) Medium16

I recommend Color Zen on Wii U which I rate a 8/10, but not this stripped down, less content, way too easy, lazy port Kids version.

Review Score: 4/10

It's unfortunate that this game is so shoddy considering how fun Color Zen was. Who wrote this review though?
Was it @Rukiafan or @SKTTR?

It's not a shoddy game.
Shoddy would be 1/10 or 2/10.
It's just extremely easy (as it's marketed for kids) and over within an hour.

Well, I'm not a kid, and even for a 2,99€ game I felt it was too short (clocking in 120 stages at 33minutes).
And once you're done there's no real reason (competition) to come back.

It's a very subjective personal score of course. I can't score a game anything higher than a 5/10 if it doesn't catch my attention for at least two hours, regardless of its quality or price or the market it was made for.
If there's not enough content or replayability or some kind of depth, then that should be accounted for in the review score.

A 4/10 is still a recommendation (albeit one to be cautious about).
Just check out the original Color Zen first (it has many easy levels as well).
Then you'll see if you need the extrapack of easy levels from Color Zen Kids.

PS. Keep in mind this is a review of the 3DS version. The Wii U version of Color Zen Kids is most likely a better version, deserving a better score.

@staroceancrazy: Thanks. Smile

Does the 3DS version of Color Zen have the same audio limitations?
Nice review, it's a shame that the game wasn't as good as the original lol. Smile
