What level should my party be at and should I upgrade my equipment before facing the first boss in the cave below the castle, during the exam at the beginning of the game?

Level 3-4 should be sufficient and you don't need to upgrade your equipment, although purchasing the pot helmet for your two starting party members could make the boss fight slightly easier.

@Rukiafan I believe you have to master every other job before you can hire the Knight.
