Review: Death End Re;Quest (PS4 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Deep Dive Into Insanity!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Dxji_a10

Developed by Galapagos RPG and published by Idea Factory, Death End Re;Quest for the PS4 is not only one of the best games released by Idea Factory thus-far, it is also one of the darkest, possibly even eclipsing Mary Skelter in that regard. Continue reading our review to find out more about why we have such high praise for this game!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 34106610

The story in Death End Re;Quest is one of pure terror as the protagonist Shina, a developer of a VRMMO is trapped inside her own game  which is bugged and damaged beyond all recognition for more than a year and initially has lost all of her memories. The bugs in the game are able to not only glitch and drive the lifelike NPC's to insanity, but are also somehow effecting Shina in the same way. Luckily some of her colleagues figure out she's alive and mount a rescue attempt, however before long bizarre things begin to happen to them as well in the real world. Be prepared for tons of horrific scenes and terrifying narrative that is highly recommended to be played where no minors are around.

The gameplay while mostly similar to other Idea Factory games such as the Neptunia series has a ton of unique nuances that really make the game feel unique, such as altering the genre of the game, activating cheats, and investigating the secrets of Shina's disappearance in the real world. The corruption system is also interesting as you can go into glitch mode once corruption reaches a certain percentage and grants you access to new skills as well as boosting your powers. Oh and the character transforms and in this state has next to no clothing for some odd reason.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 34106611

The game is somewhat lengthy clocking in at nearly 60 hours and the controls are quite intuitive and easy to learn despite the complex gameplay mechanics. As for the audio-visual presentation, it is exceptionally good despite clearly being a somewhat lower budget game. The character models are superb, as are the dungeons, visual novel style cutscenes, and even the battlegrounds during battles. The only area where the game struggles a bit is with the special effects which aren't bad mind you, just somewhat limited. Regardless the visual presentation is great.

The audio presentation is even better with an amazing soundtrack that fits the game like a glove and superb english voice acting or the equally good Japanese voice acting if you prefer! Overall the audio-visual presentation is nearly perfect as is the game as a whole!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Aa612f10

Bottom-Line: With a superbly dark story, excellent and unique gameplay, flawless controls, and a nearly perfect audio-visual presentation, Death End Re;Quest for the PS4 is a top-notch JRPG that is worth every penny, however it must be stressed that this game is only meant for mature audiences. That said we give the game a perfect level of recommendation!

News: March 2019 Pokemon Direct!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gotta Announce 'Em All!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Pokemo10

Hey gamers, Bre here with some quick news on the new Pokemon direct! As I am sure some of you have seen by now a new Pokemon Direct has hit the web, and boy did it bring some happiness to Pokemon gamers like me!

For those of you who have not seen the direct yet, I got the fill in on all the details you need to know! First off the new Pokemon game for the switch was announced given the titles “Pokemon Shield” and “Pokemon Sword.” This brings in a whole another generation of Pokemon and a new region to catch them in! It’s been a while since we saw a new generation of Pokemon, and while rumors were swirling around for a while now we were beginning to think this would never come!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 D0atyhwXgAAYt1Y-920x518

With a new generation of Pokemon and a new region of course comes new starters and what would a Pokemon game be if the starters weren’t of the grass, water, and fire type. The first starter we are going to talk about goes by “Grokey” and is the grass starter that is a Monkey form that starts off in its first evolution as an Grass
and fighting type.

The second starter we got announced was a cute little rabbit/bunny named “Scorbunny” who judging by his name you can probably guess is a Fire and fighting type. And let’s not forget our new little water friend “Sobble” who brings up the three starting types with Water and fighting. These three new starters already have stolen our hearts, and are bound to bring along lots of fun and trouble.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Starters-720x405

The last new thing we can cover that we been told for now is the name of the new region the game will take place in named “the Galar Region.” This region consists of all different types of land from treacherous mountains, to snow covered areas, and more. This region is bound to bring upon new journeys and fun times. As for now, we don’t know too much about the new land, but with time we are sure Nintendo will give us more.

Welp that’s it for name gamers, I’ll see you next time!

Review: Pokemon ~ Let's Go Eevee Edition (Switch Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's Go Pokefun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Hi there gamers, Bre here with another review for another great game from our friends at Nintendo! This time around I will be reviewing “Let’s Go Eevee” for the Nintendo Switch. Let’s Go Eevee is a fun game that takes the classic tales from three of our beloved past Pokémon games, “Pokémon: Blue, Red, and Yellow” and combines them into one game full of new twists, characters, and more.

Let’s Go Eevee takes you on the journey to becoming a Pokémon master by traveling roads to several towns and battling in gyms that feature in eight different types of Pokémon forcing you to master all different types of Pokémon and learn the ins and outs of the Pokémon world. The game comes with an awesome story mode that makes you work for what you want but keeps a mystery about while playing through the story piece by piece. The last bit of fun this game offers is in the fact that you can trade for alternate forms of certain Pokemon. Overall, I love this game, and cannot wait to explore the rest of the story from within, as my process continues I’ll post updates.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Pros of this game:
- Allows for co-op with friends
- - awesome storyline
- Features many lovable characters from the past games
- Brings a bit of the past with the new
- Poke ball plus lets you bring your game from GO to Let’s Go
- new fun alolan forms of your favorite Pokemons

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Poke-ball-plus.jpg.optimal

Now that we have talked about the positives of the game let’s get down to the down side cause as we all know with the good always comes some bad sadly. One downside to this game is it tends to fall a bit shorter than the older games, and some people say that the throwing technique makes it too easy.

While I think the throwing, technique is great I can see where this makes the game a bit less fun, and why the older trainers may like the classic form back. The other downside is that if you walk your Pokémon in your poke ball plus too long it can overpower the game taking some of the fun/challenge out people are saying. While these may not seem like major concerns these are things that the classic Pokémon gamers have brought up.

Cons to this game:
- Overpowering by Poke ball Plus
- Throwing technique makes catching too easy
- Co-op can only be done via local mode

Bottom-Line: this game is very fun to me, and I love that it combines Pokémon Go with Let’s Go, and that I can replay through parts of the classic games as I did miss the first in the series sadly. I do believe this game was a great way to connect the two Pokémon versions, and I give it a good level of recommendation!

Review: Asdivine Hearts II (PS4 PSN)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Totally Twobular!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Hqdefa10

developed by Exe Create Inc. and published by KEMCO, Asdivine Hearts II is a direct sequel to the original Asdivine Hearts that takes place a couple of years after the events of the first game and is every bit as enjoyable! Continue reading our review to find out why we think this is on par with KEMCO's best release on home consoles to date!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Asdivi10

The story in Asdivine Hearts II is quite hilarious at times, but can take itself seriously when necessary as well. The character development is top-notch especially if you count how the characters grow and change across both games in the series. The gameplay is more-or-less the same, although there are some pretty good tweaks that have been made to the game.

The added buddy system is the biggests change and adds more depth to the battles. These buddies aid you in battle and act as support units, boosting power, healing you, etc. The gem system also returns from the first game and it allows you to gain use of spells, boost stats, and add effects to your weapons and defense. Overall it's mostly unchanged, however it feels a bit less important this time around which is somewhat disappointing.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Asdivi11

Asdivine Hearts II, much like its predecessor is split between multiple worlds, however the worlds are actually MUCH more expansive this time around! The game is also quite a bit longer than most KEMCO published JRPG's clocking in at over 50 hours in length so don't expect to beat the game in a few days time!

The audio-visual presentation is fantastic. It still has a decidedly retro feel to it, but there are much more unique assets and the character models and cutscenes are more detailed. The soundtrack is also quite catchy and fits the game perfectly! Overall the audio-visual presentation is most certainly really good!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Asdvii10

Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, a superb story, and a great retro-style audio-visual presentation, Asdivine Hearts II is an amazing budget JRPG that will knock your socks off! And the impressive amount of content will keep you coming back for more! And lastly the game is also PSTV compatible which is always a good thing in our opinions! Overeall we give Asdivine Hearts II for the PS4 and Vita a nearly perfect level of recommendation!

Review: Marenian Tavern Story: Patty and the Hungry God (PS4 PSN)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Pub"lic Sensation!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Unnamed-3.445x245

Developed by Rideon Inc. and published by KEMCO, Merenian Tavern Story is a very relaxed JRPG with simulation elements that clearly has been inspired by the long-running Atelier series, but has an identity and flavor of humor of its own. Is the game worth purchasing though? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Unnamed-2.445x245

The story in Merenian Tavern Story is cutesy with a quirky sense of humor. The protagonist and her family get cursed when her brother is possessed by the God of Poverty and must work at the local tavern and work off their debt while learning how to undo the possession. There's actually much more to do than simply work at the tavern though! You also gather and hunt monsters for materials in the dungeons, grow materials at the local farm, do favors for customers, and much more, which will keep you entertained and busy for quite some time.

The only downside is that the game doesn't always explain what you need to do next to advance the story, which can be somewhat annoying at times. The gameplay is very enjoyable and is very reminiscent of the Atelier series of JRPG's. The turn-based battles are quite enjoyable and the bosses require some strategic planning to defeat.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Unnamed-1.445x245

The controls are easy to learn which is always a good thing. Marenian Tavern Story is also fairly lengthy and will take most newcomers a good 30 hours to beat, but completionists will find the game is significantly longer to 100%. The audio-visual presentation is nice enough, the 16 graphics look amazing while the character art in the visual novel style cutscenes looks detailed and gorgeous. The music is pretty enjoyable as well and fits the game well!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Unnamed.445x245

Bottom-Line: With a great story that's both enjoyable and humorous, amazing gameplay, and an excellent audio-visual presentation, Marenian Tavern Story for the PS4 is a highly enjoyable game that is a blast to play and we highly recommend it to fans of the genre! We give the game a a good to great level of recommendation!

Quest of The Year!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
It's been many years since we've seen a Dragon Quest title on a Playstation console and Dragon Quest XI fills the multi-generational void quite nicely! It feels very similar to Dragon Quest VIII, however its scale and character development are on a completely different level. The game is divided into three acts and each act is over 50 hours in length unless you try to power through the game, "Where's the fun in that?". The game also features a robust post-game with many more hours of gameplay to tackle after the end credits roll.
The music is fantastic despite the fact that the songs are in midi format and the visuals are absolutely breathtaking. It should come as no surprise after reading this as to why we think Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of An Elusive Age deserved to be chosen as our choice for 2018's game of the year!
New Pokemon releases have always been a huge affair, there's no denying that, but being able to play the first generation games in glorious HD with tons of updates and new features is nothing short of mesmerizing! The updated gameplay formula makes the games feel like they're completely new and the story definitely brings a sense of nostalgia to longtime fans of the series
These reasons are why Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu and Pokemon: Let's Go Eevee earn the number three spot for the best games of 2018!
Review: Chronus Arc (PS4 PSN)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Refreshingly Decent Title!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 CA-3-Chronus-Arc-capture
Developed by Hit-Point and published by KEMCO, Chronus Arc is a solid budget RPG in many ways, but is it worth the cost? We think so, continue reading our review to learn why!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 CA-2-Chronus-Arc-capture
The story in Chronus Arc is relatively straightforward and cliche, however it is still quite enjoyable despite not doing anything in its story that hasn't been done before. The gameplay is also standard JRPG fare which oozes with retro goodness, between it's retro visuals and soundtrack as well as its turn-based battles and simplistic gameplay mechanics that would feel right at home on a home console of the early to mid 90's! The gameplay is superb, but does lose some points for playing it safe and not doing anything unique, but it's still highly enjoyable!
Item collection plays a big role in Chronus Arc and the game does a good job at making the grind to complete your collection quite fun! The controls in the game are also simple and easy to master as expected from a game that emulates the style of  the 16-bit classics we all know and love!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 CA-4-Chronus-Arc-capture
The game can be quite difficult later on though if you've played any major SNES JRPG this will hardly pose any trouble with beating the game! Also Chronus Arc is cross-buy and the Vita version PSTV compatible which is always good in our book!
Visually the game looks great in all of its 16-bit glory and the visual novel style story scenes look nice as well, but it's no SNES Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger so don't expect it to look as good as the best games of the 90's, regardless it still looks nostalgic and should bring back memories of playing the classics of yesteryear.
The soundtrack on the other-hand is hit and miss and more so miss. It's easily the weakest aspect of the game . The sound effects can be quite annoying as well, so unfortunately overall the audio presentation is below average.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 CA-5-Chronus-Arc-capture
Bottom-Line:
With great visuals, excellent controls, and a good story that is fun to see play out, although it's somewhat cliche and predictable as well as gameplay that's great, but doesn't do anything new or unique, Chronus Arc is a worthy budget JRPG that's worth giving a shot if you enjoy JRPG's from the SNES era, but the annoying sound effects and lacklustre soundtrack do hold the game a bit, but overall we give the game a decent to solid level of recommendation!
Review: Tales of Graces F (PS3 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

F = Fantastic!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Graces2
Developed and published by Bandai Namco, Tales of Graces F is most definitely the best Tales of title since Tales of Symphonia and even exceeds it in many aspects! Continue reading the rest of our review to find out just why we hold this game in such high regard!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Graces5
Tales of Graces "F" uture's story is among the best we've seen in ages from a JRPG, it's a tale of growing up and learning from one's past. The main game is separated into three different story arcs, Childhood Arc, Adult Arc, and Future Arc and in-total the game is about 60-70 hours long if you power through it, but if you want to get everything in the game, expect to sink 200-300 hours into the game! The story is a touching and heartfelt one, albeit exceptionally dark. Despite this the game's characters often do a great job at throwing in humor whenever things start getting too dark. This constant roller-coaster between seriousness and silliness is one of Tales of Graces F's greatest strengths!
The gameplay is crazy good with a unique battle system. Basically the battles are in real-time just as in other Tales of titles and you can freely move and attack enemies, but things are pretty different than in say Tales of Symphonia. First of all arts are separated into Assault Arts and Beta Arts, Assault Arts is basically a combo system reminiscent of beat 'em up's and fighters where attacking using different direction combinations will result in different combo attacks, some can be almost as good as Beta Arts, so learning combo's is key to mastering the game!
Another unique gameplay element is the revamped title system which allows you to learn arts, upgrade stats and arts, leart unique combat skills, and earn costumes by earning SP, if every time you earn enough SP you'll rank up your titles which each of the five ranks earns you a skill, buff, costume, etc. And once you reach rank 5 you can earn additional SP to master the title which boosts the effects of the title.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Graces3
The game has done away with Technique Points or TP which were basically Magic Points in exchange for a Combo Count system CC for short. Your arts and combo's use up CC and when you run out you can't attack until it recharges, but luckily this only takes a second or two tops. You can raise your CC by gaining levels, reaching certain ranks in certain titles, and by upgrading your weapons.
The game also possesses an item upgrade and creation system called dualization which has you combine items to create new ones or upgrade equipment by reforging them into stronger or completely new forms. The game also has some puzzle solving here and there which actually gets quite challenging especially in the Future Arc, but shouldn't be impossible to figure out on your own.
As always you can start a new game plus after completing the game, but unlike the typical grade store, you no longer earn Grade Points during battle, instead certain accomplishments earn you points, the best source of Grade Points is easily from mastering titles, each title you master earns you a small sum of Grade Points and with nearly 700 titles in-total you can rack-up a tremendous amount of points to give you an edge in the next playthrough, which you'll need if you ever want to beat the game in Evil difficulty mode.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Graces4
Lastly the game possesses a Trials of Graces mode which gives you some challenges to test your skills of the game, it's an interesting albeit forgettable mode, but can be fun. The controls in the game are easy to learn, but quite difficult to master so you'll need some practice to get skilled at playing this game!
As for the audio-visual presentation, Tales of Graces F looks incredible considering it was originally released as a Wii title in Japan, the world is lush and detailed, the characters are unique and look amazing, and the special effects can be breathtaking at times. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing and fits the mood of the game perfectly, while the voice acting is superb! Overall the audio-visual presentation is just as flawless as the rest of the game!
Bottom-Line:
With blissful gameplay, a top-notch story, excellent controlls, and a flawless audio-visual presentation, Tales of Graces F is by far the best game in the long-running Tales of series and will provide fans of the genre hundreds of hours of superb gameplay! We wholeheartedly recommend this game to any and all PS3 owners and award this game a perfect level of recommendation!
Review: Revenant Dogma (PS4 PSN)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Darkness Ahoy!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Revenant-dogma-rev-2
Developed by EXE-CREATE and published by KEMCO, Revenant Dogma is another solid KEMCO JRPG, but what sets it apart from the myriad of KEMCO titles already available on PSN? Continue reading our review to find out!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Revenant-dogma-rev-1
The gameplay is pretty straightforward and there isn't much that separates it from previous KEMCO JRPG's, but what it does do is pretty solid. The game possesses 3-D battles which are definitely better than those of Revenant SAGA with better frame-rate and special effects. The battles are turn-based as usual and the mechanics while simple are very enjoyable.
The story is pretty dark this time around and there are a good deal of superb plot-twists that should keep most players interested in what will happen next! The game is fairly lengthy as well, clocking in at around 35 hours in length. The game is pretty easy overall so don't expect a serious challenge, at least until the post-game content. The controls are intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing. And you PSTV owners will be happy to hear that Revenant Dogma is PSTV compatible!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Revenant-dogma-rev-3
Visually Revenant Dogma is generally nice looking with its 2-D world and detailed visual novel style story scenes, however the 3-D battlegrounds are a bit drab and the 3-D character and enemy models are rather blocky which detracts from the game's overall aesthetics. The soundtrack on the other hand is decent, albeit a little uninspiring. Overall the game's audio-visual presentation is average to slightly above average.
Bottom-Line:
With solid gameplay, a great story, and excellent controls Revenant Dogma is a pretty enjoyable experience, however an average audio-visual presentation does drag the overall experience down a bit, but overall we give the game a solid level of recommendation!
Review: Fernz Gate (PS4 PSN)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The "Solid" Gateway To Fun!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
Developed by Exe-Create and published by KEMCO, Fernz Gate is a fairly lengthy KEMCO JRPG that actually does quite a few unique things not seen in other KEMCO games thus-far and it is a breath of fresh air! Is this enough to give the game a good level of recommendation? We think so and here's why:
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
The story in Fernz Gate is excellent with several surprising plot-twists, unfortunately we can't explain these in detail without spoiling the game, but we can say that they're are a cut-above the usual plot-twists seen in previous KEMCO JRPG's that have been released on dedicated gaming platforms!
The gameplay is solid as expected from a KEMCO game, if you're looking for modern gameplay then look elsewhere. Fernz Gate does have the standard turn-based formula of previous KEMCO releases, but adds to it with the Buddy System, basically animal familiars who fight as allies. Your buddies can boost your abilities and even do joint attacks alongside your human characters which is a fantastic addition to the gameplay mechanics!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
The game's difficulty is relatively easy so don't expect to get stuck all that often. If you want to earn the platinum trophy expect to sink over 60 hours into the game at the very least. Lastly the controls are straightforward and easy to learn which is always a good thing in our opinions.
Also just so you all know the game is cross-buy between Vita and PS4 and what's more the Vita version is PSTV compatible which is not something you see very often these days.
The audio-visual presentation is pretty good with definite retro vibes while still possessing fairly detailed HD graphics. The music is also fantastic and fits the game perfectly!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
Bottom-Line: With great gameplay, excellent story and controls, and a superb audio-visual presentation, Fernz Gate is the perfect game for all fans of retro-style JRPG's and as such we give the game a good level of recommendation!
Review: The Lost Child (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Battle of The Damned!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
Developed by Kadokawa Games and published by NIS America, The Lost Child is a dungeon crawling JRPG with heavy religious overtones, and gameplay similar to the Shin Megami Tensei  games, but does it live up to the aforementioned series? Not really, but it's still a very solid game in its own right and here's why:
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
First off, The Lost Child has a very compelling story with an extremely dark overtone. It starts off very strong, but then kind of peters out for a while before picking back up, which is somewhat disappointing. The character development is slow, but the cast is great so you'll love them right away. Now to the real meat of the game, its gameplay is good, but never really does anything to set The Lost Child apart from previous games in the SMT sub-genre.
The gameplay while great gets quite repetitive after a while which is a shame and hurts the game's overall replayability. In-terms of content, expect the game to take somewhere over 50 hours to finish. The Lost Child is also an extremely challenging game so expect to die a lot!
The controls are pretty good and responsive which is nice. The audio-visual presentation is varied on one hand the visual novel style cutscenes are gorgeous and full of character, but the world itself, especially the dungeons are VERY bland and lifeless. There isn't a whole lot of variety in the dungeons designs either, however it still "feels" good despite the poor design choices which proves that this game could have truly been great if things had been better designed, however it's still quite fun as is.
The soundtrack is great for the most part though there are a few lacklustre tracks in the game, the sound effects and voice acting are great by the way! It was kind of weird hearing the english voice actress for Botan from the Yu Yu Hakusho series in a Anime style game after all of these years, but it was a pleasant surprise, Bingo!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
Bottom-Line:
With good, albeit somewhat repetitive gameplay, superb story, a fantastic audio presentation, fantastic anime-style cutscenes, and solid controls, The Lost Child is a good game, however somewhat bland and lacklustre dungeons that are also somewhat lacking in creativity really hold the game back. At the end of the day, however the game is solid to good so we give the game a good level of recommendation to all fans of dungeon crawling RPG's.
Review: Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded (PS4 Retail)
Wandering Lady In A Strange Land.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
Developed by Aqua Style and published by NIS America, Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded is a roguelike mystery dungeon game with a very Eastern theme and it is among the strangest games we've played, but we enjoyed every minute of it! The only problem is the game's price. Continue reading our review to learn more:
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
The gameplay in Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded for PS4 is more or less pretty typical Mystery Dungeon stuff, but it's done quite nicely with very few of the traps or shortcomings of the genre. The problem is, that it never tries to do anything new and as a result feels like a solid, yet somewhat stale game in this regard. The controls are intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing in our opinions.
As for the battles, they are fast paced and easy to figure out, but mastering some of the nuances can take a few hours. The battle system is quite solid overall. The story and characters are extremely weird albeit in a very endearing way with bizarre plot-twist and excellently quirky characters!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
The game is breathtakingly beautiful visually with detailed characters and a colorful and lush world. The enemies are just as gorgeous, while the visual novel style storytelling and handful of CGI cut-scenes are superb. The soundtrack and Japanese voice acting are great though we'd have liked to see an option for English voice overs, but otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed the game's presentation!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 900x
Bottom-Line:
With a solid gameplay and story, great controls, and a superb audio-visual presentation, Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded is a solid game that worth checking out if you enjoy mystery dungeon titles, however the game does lack a bit in creative and unique gameplay and it's pretty expensive to boot. Overall, however we did enjoy the game and as such we give Touhou Genso Wanderer: Reloaded for the PS4 a solid level of recommendation.
Review: Sword Art Online Fatal Bullet (PS4 Retail)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A Fatal Flurry of Bullets!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Title10
This is the latest installment in the SAO (Sword Art Online) series from Bandai Namco. In this game, you are a new player in the world of Gun Gale Online. Which is a post-apocalyptic world where it is a lawless world outside the main city SCC Glocken. As a new player in this competitive VRMMO (Virtual Reality Mass Multiplayer Online)  can you become the greatest player in this game?
Story
The story begins shortly after you enter the Glocken for the very first time where you are introduced to a strange young girl in a pink outfit who reveals herself to be your childhood friend "Kureha".  She begins explaining what GGO is and showing the player around town.  During the tour guide, the player is then thrust into a tournament against other players for an incredibly rare item which whoever obtains it will have a massive advantage among other players.  In this tournament, Kureha will quickly explain how to protect fight and protect yourself since in this mode it's kill or be killed. And she takes you to an area inside the dungeon so both of you won't be targeted by high tier players.  Among reaching a fork in a road both the player and Kureha runs into one of GGO top ruthless players Itsuki. Who finds two low-level players competing in the tournament and believes this a joke and lets you pass without killing you.  Once the player passes Itsuki they will end up in a teleporter room which leads to the rare item.
However, you aren't the only one who found the room.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Explai10
Your Afrs-sys could be a male or a female. It's up to the player.
The rare item is called an AFr-sys X type which  is an android that you can customize his or her looks and give it a name(He/She will be nicknamed Rei regardless of what you picked) Rei is going to function as your partner and grant you access to a special weapon called the UFG (Ultra Fiber Gun) which functions as a grappling hook  which can be used to access high ground, take down airborne enemy units (except flying Gundams)  and steal items from knocked down enemies. After this point, you will meet the original SAO character cast. Kritio can explain all the previous key points of previous games that link with Fatal Bullet to bring the player up to speed. Then the story is all downhill from here henceforth.  As the player keep your expectations extremely low when it comes to Fatal Bullet story and everything plot related.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Upgrad10
After a few upgrades, she can do banking and purchase equipment with allowance money. Rei has some pretty good taste in weapons.
A mass majority of the story is going to be about upgrading Rei from finding parts and interacting with people around it. Since you are a beginner Rei will just tell you that you suck and because your low prestige and level, the features that the Rei had are gone and doesn't remember all it can do. Rei is a trip to deal with, it will go through personality conflict crisis, extreme anxiety, moments of depression,  running away for some of the dumbest reasons, tripping over nothing, and so much more.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Kritio10
Searching for the bad guy in the tournament.
Aside from the main story which involves Rei.  After the majority of the story is finished the player gains access to play Kritio. In this mode, the story becomes much darker and a lot of people lives are on the line, as Kritio your main objective is to work alongside the Japanese Government and figure out the mysteries of why people are dying from playing GGO,  and the killing happens only during interviews and major events. The next major event is called B.O.B  where all the top ranking players will be in and most likely when the killer will strike next.  However the there are hundreds of players,  many of them are good and well known and some are just bullet sponges,  you are only given a few hours to figure out this mystery, Who is the killer? Why are they killing top players in GGO? Will Kritio and his friends be safe?
Gameplay
When it comes to gameplay Fatal Bullet does it really well here and it's a lot of fun! It is a fast-paced third-person action game. In this game, you can have up to of 3 party members join you. Each member is represented by an icon next to their name which signifies their role in combat. There are six main roles which easily fall into two categories which are Offensive and Defensive. The offensive roles are Assault, Destroyer, and Sniper. Assault is the fast hitting, in your face, and dance around bullets role,  Destroyer just use weapons and abilities that hit extremely hard, use explosions, cause black holes and leaves nothing but destruction,  Sniper picks off enemies from a distance and have very unique support abilities.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Roles10
For example. This nutcase of a woman here is an assault class character due to her icon.
As for the defensive roles you have Tank which is to soak up a lot of damage and extremely difficult to take down and most enemies will focus on the tank while the other members do their role. Engineer which uses a lot of skills to weaken enemies, decrease attack/defense, poison, shock, or set enemies on fire. The final role is to support which is basically the healer. They use healing skills, revive fallen members, increase their combat abilities. Support roles are always welcomed.
The roles are determined by the character stats and skills they have equipped.  There are six main stats in the game Strength, Vitality, Intelligence, Agility, Dexterity, and Luck. Seems simple enough but this can get complex rather quickly so here is an easy breakdown.
Strength-  Increases your carry weight, damage with photon swords (Star Wars lightsabers) and a requirement to hold weapons.   A high investment in this stat will push the character towards damage roles.
Agility- Increases your full sprint speed, accuracy, and defense. Many evasive and photon sword skills require lots of Agility. A high investment in this stat will push the character in the damager roles  mainly in the Assault role
Dexterity- Increases your accuracy, main damage with firearms, weak point damage and the main requirement to use all weapons.   As a player you must have  Dexterity,  this is the main damage stat of firearms and without investment in this, you will be locked out of 99% of the weapons.
Vitality- Increases how much damage you can take. Raises max health. A high investment with this stat puts the character into a supporter role,  also very handy with shotguns.
Intelligence-  decreases the cooldown time of skills (That's a good thing) and gadgets( Items) increases the chance of status aliments attacks working on enemies.  A high investment in this stat puts the character in Engineer or Support roles.
Luck-  Increases drop rate of items, increases the rarity of items,  reduce damage from status ailments,  increase critical hit chance.  A universal stat like Dexterity.  However, I did notice in my playthroughs high luck grants you better skills on weapons and accessories it could be just me though.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Build10
The player can only allocate stats and skills for their created character and Rei.  Any other party member will do their own skills and stats.  While using a skill that is in your role that ability becomes more effective. However, the player can equip any ability from any role as long as they meet the gun and stat requirements to do so.
In this game when it comes to equipment there are three categories weapons, accessories, and outfit.  You can find weapons and accessories from shops and sometimes fallen enemies drop them as loot.  There is no armor in this game what so ever so if you want to increase your defense, raise up the agility and vitality stats.  There are eight main weapons in the game. Going from the lightest to heaviest it is handguns,  photon swords, submachine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles,  RPG's/ grenade launchers and finally Gatling guns.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Weapon10
Agil is the only person in the game who can appraise your equipment to see what you obtain.  He's just awesome!
All weapon share these few traits among themselves.  Stat requirements to use them, Weapon rank,  fire type (Single, burst, semi-auto, fully automatic)  memory chips (Traits/added effects)  and rarity.  The rarity comes in different tiers,  grey, red and blue being the lowest while yellow and green being the best the higher the rarity the better stats and memory chips you will find on the equip weather if it's accessory or weapon.   The further you go in the game the weapon ranks will increase demanding higher stat requirements but in return offer higher damage outputs. Fashion is basically to look good.  And accessories are completely random when it comes to abilities. Some increase in base stats, some offer a  % of protection against certain attacks, and many are just so bad you will just sell them.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 The_mo10
The two most important characters Agil and Lisabeth. Agil appraises and buys items
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Minibo10
When outside of SCC Glocken the screen changes into battle screen until you go back to town.  Here you will have an assist auto-aim that will lock on to a target that is in your firing range. If this feature is annoying it can be turned off by pressing up on the direction pad of the controller.  The thin blue bar underneath the gun icon/ bullets is the player's health bar and trust me when you start off in this game you do not get that much health and it feels like you can die so easily in this game. It does not take much effort to kill a player.  There are some defensive tactics that can work such as hiding behind cover, dashing and rolling away or just find high ground such as buildings and mountains.  The enemies will also do tricks like that including setting up ambushes, using smoke grenades to confuse the player, summon a Gundam (A giant robot with superior combat skills),   or a straight up gun fight.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Gundam10
Oh no! It's a Gundam!  Need to run FASTER!
The difficulty of enemies out in the field ranges drastically from easy to is this even fair anymore?   You have the cupcake difficulty enemies such as scorpions, bees, run and shoot automation and then you have the insanely difficult enemies which include human A.I (Artificial Intelligence) enemies which seem to never miss a shot even while rolling, A Gundam,  some evil looking hunchback monster that shoots fire and likes to run people over.  The teammates you can have on your team are classified as stupid. There have been many times where they will fail to do their role or follow commands. The player can give commands by pressing in the touchpad. Sadly many of them are just to dumb so commands are almost virtually useless. If the player falls in battle one of your team members can just run over to you and revive you. Honestly, this is a 50% chance of working.  They can run towards and just look at your corpse until they die, trip over your corpse,  run to you and then make a U-turn  and do the shuffle dance and reload their gun ( I wish I was making this up)  or my personal favorite screw up is where they do nothing but barrel rolls to your character, trip over your corpse and then get shot and die.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Fucked10
At that moment I knew... I messed up.
There are dungeons in this game and once inside you are automatically given a blank minimap and it will fill up the more you progress through the dungeon. Inside you will fight dozens of enemies who will block your path to fight if you are in a long dungeon there will be multiple teleporters. So you can just skip sections if you feel like it. Also, there are very carefully hidden treasure chests that are for a quest item, ammunition, or some rare part for upgrading.  There are mini bosses and just regular bosses. Both drop unique equipment. The only real difference between the two is that mini-bosses have around two health bars when regular bosses have three or more.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Level_11
Once you head back to town you from the field you will get results on your actions outside.  The more enemies you defeat the more money and experience you obtain, gain enough and you will level up. Every level up the player will be awarded CP which is the currency to spend on upgrading the character stats.
Graphics.
Go on a date with her and she'll make the ultimate female armor.
Sadly she hates the armor and will never wear it again.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Madmax10
Become a bro with Agil and he'll give everyone MadMax punk outfits and take on all GGO while making a profit.
It is beautiful. I had no problem with the graphical look of the game characters and how it looks outside. It was just wonderfully done. You can unlock characters dates/hangouts by increasing their affinity towards you which then awards the player with unique cutscenes or romance in your bed. This does take quite of a lot of work and dedication to pull off many of the scenes are very enjoyable and quite funny. As far as problems go, there are two issues which include how dull the dungeon designs are for the majority of the dungeons and they needed to add a few more enemy designs.
Soundtrack
It was truly wonderful. The soundtrack is really good, they have some jazz pieces, upbeat songs, and a few some pop songs. My favorite pieces of music in the game comes from Zeliska theme and the music they play in the quest area lobbies like treasure hunting, PVP (Player vs Player), and unique enemies.  There is a little something for everyone. It's hard to dislike the music in this game.
Multiplayer
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Online10
This what co-op looks like,  just smashing a boss.
They have a player vs player matchup which I was never able to test. Every time I join a lobby no one is ever online to play a match. The other online game mode is where you join in a room up to around eight people to fight a boss. Once the boss is defeated everyone obtains an item and some money. You do not get exp from playing online.
DLC/ Season pass worth it?
I personally do not own the DLC or Season Pass. However from word of mouth the current DLC that is out is called Ambush of the Imposters which grants access to new weapons, new hairstyles, fashion, three characters the most talked about is Musketeer X  and how awesome she is.  The new dungeons have veterans of this game ripping their hair out and comparing the difficulty to Dark Souls series (Extremely difficult games) As far as the season pass is worth it?  If you like the game sure go for it!
This game could have easily been the best of the Sword Art Online video games released. The gameplay is great, the graphics are beautiful and the soundtrack is amazing. However despite all of that the game suffers from a horrible story and terrible A.I partners.  If you look past the story you have a pretty decent game on your hands with just a few flaws but you can easily spend many hours in this game and have fun.
An Even Bigger Festival!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Developed and Published by Snowcastle Games, Earthlock is a sort of director's cut remake of Earthlock: Festival of Magic which we reviewed for the Wii U [here insert url with alternate text] Is the new content worth double-dipping? Perhaps, but this is definitely the definitive version of the game without a doubt and here's why:

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

The gameplay is more or less unchanged from the previous version of Earthlock so expect rather enjoyable turn-based battles, robust partner system, and the unique stance system that Earthlock: Festival of Magic possessed. There is a ton of new content however including a quest system, new sidequests and more.

The story has been heavily altered with a ton of new content including new and alternate story scenes which will be enjoyed by newcomers and veteran players alike!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

The controls in Earthlock are solid, but the difficulty can be downright brutal at times with sudden spikes in difficulty which can be a bit jarring at times, but it didn't stop us from completing the game.

The visual presentation is nice enough for a 3-D PS4 indie title, it won't blow you away, but it's pretty nice with unique characters and enemies and a relatively detailed world. The audio on the other hand is top-notch with an excellent musical score that fits the game remarkably well! There is no voice acting which is a shame, but otherwise the audio-presentation is flawless!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Bottom-Line:

With an expanded story with quite a bit of new content, excellent gameplay, and solid controls Earthlock is a great addition to any RPG gamer's library of games, and the solid 3-D visuals and amazing soundtrack will keep you coming back for some more! Overall the game is fantastic, really the only flaw the game has are some spikes in difficulty, but thankfully those spikes are manageable if you grind a bit. We give Earthlock for the PS4 a great level of recommendation!

Mechanical Madness!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 MK-story
Developed by Hit-Point and published by KEMCO, Machine Knight is a traditional style JRPG that doesn't revolutionize the genre, but is still a solid RPG nonetheless. Continue reading our review to find out why we think the game is worth checking out:
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 MK-battle
The story of Machine Knight is much more modern in its settings than any other KEMCO JRPG we've reviewed so far which was a pleasant a refreshing surprise. The game does an excellent job of explaining the lore and technology of the world and to be frank was by far the most enjoyable aspect of the game in our opinions!
The gameplay is standard JRPG fare though the character customization via Machina Boards for each character was somewhat unique and added a bit of depth to the game. The battles are turn-based as expected from a KEMCO game, but overall the battle system was quite enjoyable albeit simple.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 MK-map
The controls in Machine Knight are intuitive and easy to learn, plus the optional touch control features are very nicely done. The game itself is fairly short in length clocking in at under 30 hours in length, but is still well worth its asking price.
The audio-visual presentation is extremely good compared to KEMCO's previous 3DS releases. The game looks like a AAA SNES JRPG and in some instances looks even better than Chrono Trigger visually. The soundtrack is also absolutely sublime and fits the game perfectly. Overall the audio-visual presentation of Machine Knight is nothing short of amazing!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 Machine-Knight
Bottom-Line:
With a unique and enjoyable story, solid gameplay, and excellent controls, Machine Knight is a worthwhile experience for any fans of the JRPG genre, while the flawless audio-visual presentation certainly adds alot to the game, Machine Knight's short length definitely is a disappointment. Regardless of that one drawback we give Machine Knight for the 3DS a solid level of recommendation!
Review: Dragon Sinker (Vita PSN)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Reeling Us In Hook, Line, & Sinker!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 2018-020
Hit-Point and KEMCO have always developed and published enjoyable JRPG's that are a great value for their consumers, but Dragon Sinker has a certain appeal that hasn't been seen in their previous console releases, but is that enough to award the game a perfect score? Not quite, but it came very close and here's why:
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 2018-021
The story is your typical fantasy fare with three races teaming up to beat an enemy none of them can vanquish on their own, but despite being very cliché it works, and is every bit as good as Final Fantasy III (NES) and Final Fantasy V (SNES). Speaking of those two Final Fantasy titles, Dragon Sinker uses a very similar job system to what those two games possessed which is as enjoyable as it sounds on paper.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 2018-022
The battles are turn-based as expected and aren't all that complex, but using effective techniques and magic is paramount later on in the game, especially if you're playing on the hard difficulty setting. The game's world is surprisingly large for a game that's essentially a modern NES title and the game is fairly lengthy as well as it can take players 20-25 hours to beat the main story and an additional 8-15 hours to beat the post-game content!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 2018-023
The controls in the game are about as simple as you'd expect so strategy plays a much larger role than your motor skills in this JRPG. One tip we need to share is that you'll want to backtrack and complete every quest in the game as the items and party members/job classes you'll obtain will help out immensely in the post-game content.
Dragon Sinker is also PSTV compatible which is always good news in our opinions!
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 2018-024
Visually the game is a real treat for retro gamers as not only is the spritework spot-on for an NES era game, Dragon Sinker also has an NES perfect color palette insuring that you'll feel like you've been transported back to the 1980's! Silliness aside, the characters are pretty varied and even change in appearance when you change their job class which is a nice touch.
The soundtrack is also nostalgic and uses genuine 8-bit chip-tunes warts and all and we loved every second of the piercingly brilliant tunes.
Topics tagged under jrpg on  - Page 2 2018-025
Bottom-Line:
With splendid gameplay and  a nostalgic story, Dragon Sinker will have you hooked from the very beginning, while the glorious 8-bit visuals and chiptunes will remind you of a simpler and more enjoyable era of gaming! Honestly there is virtually nothing that we can complain about in this game and almost everything is done flawlessly as such we give Dragon Sinker for the Vita a nearly perfect level of recommendation!
The Longest Battle Ever!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2018-014

Don't let the name and trailer fool you, The Longest Five Minutes might look and sound like Half Minute Hero at a glance, but The Longest Five Minutes is by far the better game and is a truly incredible JRPG in many ways! Continue reading our review to find out why:

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2018-015

The Longest Five Minutes is a turn-based JRPG similar to the first Lufia game in-terms of many of its mechanics, however where this game really shines is its incredible story which will have you relive the main protagonist Flash Back's journey to defeat the demon king. In this regard it's sort of similar to Half Minute Hero, however the story is much more coherent with up to three to five hours of gameplay per sequence it feels like a true JRPG unlike its spiritual predecessor Half Minute Hero.

The gameplay and story are also as good as most of the SNES classic's from the 90's with great plot-twists and other surprises, The Longest Five Minutes is an instant classic in our opinions! The game is also somewhat longer than we were expecting clocking in at between 30-40 hours in length. The only gripe we have with the game is that it's very easy to beat, though completing the game is a tricky proposition given the complex optional branching story paths the game possesses, because some of which are extremely challenging to trigger. The controls are simple and easy to learn and the game is PSTV compatible which is always fantastic news in our opinions!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2018-016

The Longest Five Minutes is a very nice looking game with crisp and vibrant 16-bit HD graphics that look amazing! Visually the game looks somewhat similar to that of the Romancing Saga 2 Vita remake. They aren't going to wow anybody, but they're exceptionally good looking, especially the character and enemy models! The music is also top-notch and fits the game's mood perfectly so overall we feel that the audio-visual presentation of the game is nearly perfect!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2018-017

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2018-018

Bottom-Line:

With a unique story, excellent gameplay, and nearly flawless audio-visual presentation, The Longest Five Minutes is a fantastic game that every JRPG fan who owns a Vita should snatch up, while the excellent controls and PSTV compatibility is the icing on the proverbial cake. The only downside of the game is its low level of difficulty, but otherwise the game is a genuine masterpiece and as such we give the game a great level of recommendation!

Review: Bonds of the Skies (3DS eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Soaring High!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Bonds-of-skies-image

Developed by Hit-Point and published by KEMCO, Bonds
of the Skies is a fantastic budget JRPG that will keep fans of the genre entertained for many hours! Is this KEMCO's best game yet? Nope, but it's still a blast to play and here's why:

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Bonds-of-skies-image-2

Bonds of The Skies has solid gameplay that is unique in various aspects, of course random encounters are in which we rather enjoy every now and then, battles are relatively straightforward, but there are some nuances such as being able to move characters around in your formation mid-battle without using a turn to increase damage given or save yourself if you're low on health by retreating to the back of your formation.

Elements play a HUGE role in the game and quite frankly make the enemies far too challenging for even intermediately skilled players in many instances, especially later in the game. We honestly had a heck of a time reviewing this, between the difficulty, a bug that was later fixed in the game, and our 3DS breaking. Still if you like a serious challenge you should enjoy Bonds of The Skies. The story is pretty unique as expected from KEMCO so be prepared for a fun romp through the world of Eil, but don't expect any major plot-twists to catch you off guard this time around. Bonds of The Skies is rather short clocking in at under 30 hours in length so don't expect a 100 hour epic adventure.

The controls are easy to learn as expected from a throwback 16-bit JRPG. The graphics are a step-up from most of KEMCO's previous 3DS titles which is nice. We also liked the character and enemy designs in Bonds of The Skies. The soundtrack is quite enjoyable as well and really sets the mood for the game!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Bonds-of-the-skies-image-2

Bottom-Line:

With solid gameplay, excellent controls, and a great audio-visual presentation, Bonds of The Skies for the 3DS is a great game that most fans of the RPG genre should thoroughly enjoy, however the difficulty and short length of the game might be off-putting for some. Regardless we give Bonds of The Skies for the 3DS a good level of recommendation!

Review: Sword Art Online ~ Lost Song (Vita Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fairy Good Song! Sorry For The Dreadful Pun...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Developed by Artdink and published by Bandai Namco, Sword Art Online: Lost Song takes place in Alfheim in the SAO mythos and is a gorgeous looking Vita game to say the least, but how does the gameplay hold up? Continue reading our review to find out!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

The gameplay in Lost Song is vastly different from that of Hollow Fragment and in many ways it makes the game much more accessible and enjoyable than its predecessor. There are two HUGE differences between Lost Song and Hollow Fragment, the first is obviously the flight system which is very fun, but sadly is only used in the open fields of the game, and the second is that your characters can use magic to dominate the battlefield! The magic you can use depends on your character's race. Some characters such as Rain even have original sword skills that only they possess.

Another new feature is that you can choose to play as any of the 20+ included anime characters and Rain or a original character you can create, be warned that the character creation is extremely limited and disappointing. Much like Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, Sword Art Online: Lost Song takes place in an alternate reality to the anime series and light novels. Basically the anime and light novels occur in Timeline A while each of the games take place in let's say Timeline B. There's a definite continuity to the games so the storylines do compliment one-another.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

The difficulty in Sword Art Online: Lost Song can be brutal at times unless you spend alot of time grinding levels, and weapon/skill mastery. Also the controls can be fairly daunting at first until you get used to the spellcasting and flight engine in the game. The game is much shorter than Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment so don't expect a single playthrough to take over a hundred hours this time around. Sword Art Online: Lost Song is also PSTV compatible which is always a good thing in our opinions!

The audio-visual presentation in this game is leaps and bounds better than those in Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment. The PS4 version shown in the images is basically an upscaled version of the Vita game so expect to be be impressed! The character models are gorgeous and highly detailed, the world is beautiful beyond expectations, and the game's handful of CG cutscenes are a sight to behold! The music is generally better than Hollow Fragment's, the only downside to the audio presentation is that there is no option for English voice acting.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Bottom-Line:

With excellent gameplay that is both unique and highly enjoyable, a superb story, and top-notch visuals, Sword Art Online: Lost Song will be an instant hit for any fan of the franchise, while the unique gameplay mechanics and PSTV compatibility will appease hardcore gamers to their core! The soundtrack is also improved over that of Hollow Fragment. The only two things we found disappointing was how short the game is for a JRPG and that once again English voice acting isn't available in the game. Still the game is a fantastic addition to any Vita or PSTV owner's game library and as such we give the game a good to great level of recommendation!

Review: Earthlock ~ Festival of Magic (Wii U eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Rare Western JRPG Making A Festively Magical Splash On Wii U!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Developed and published by Snowcastle Games, Earthlock: Festival of Magic might be developed by a European company, but is truly a JRPG at heart with a colorful artstyle, and music you'd expect from the Japanese sub-genre of RPG's. Is the game as a whole worth purchasing if you're a Wii U owner? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Earthlock: Festival of Magic is a mouthful so we'll just call it Earthlock for the rest of the review. Earthlock is a turn-based Japanese-style RPG that is the first fully 3D indie RPG to ever grace a Nintendo console in the West. The story is all about magic and youth and well it's pretty good, though don't expect anything groundbreaking in this regard. The gameplay on the other-hand is a bit more unique with a monster partner system, and a farm to grow ammunition for your characters guns. There's also a bit of city development and other very enjoyable features that we thoroughly had a blast with!

The game itself can be relatively short if you try to power through it, but completionists can expect over 60 hours of gameplay! The difficulty can be challenging at times, but for the most part is well balanced with easy solutions to beat otherwise extremely challenging bosses. The controls are also intuitive and easy to learn which is always a good thing, however the lack of Gamepad features despite the fact that the game can only be played with one is rather disappointing.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Visually the game looks absolutely breathtaking for an indie title as the world has a crazy amount of detail, the characters and monsters look great, and the special effects look amazing, especially the lighting effects! The audio presentation is also fantastic with great tracks that fit the game well to great ambiance in certain dungeons and locations. Overall we'd say the game showcases just how good a 3D indie game can look with enough effort!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Bottom-Line:

With amazing gameplay, easy to learn controls, and a top-notch audio-visual presentation, Earthlock: Festival of Magic is an insanely fun game that'll keep you coming back for more, the own negative aspect of the game is that it really doesn't make use of the Gamepad. Overall however we give the game an amazing level of recommendation!

Review: Mary Skelter ~ Nightmares (Vita Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Psychedelic Fairytale Like No Other!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Full

Developed by Compile Heart and published by Idea Factory, Mary Skelter: Nightmares for the Vita/PSTV is an extremely psychedelic dungeon crawling JRPG with a story that's crazier than anything we've ever seen before. Despite the bizarreness this game possesses that will undoubtedly be off-putting for some, "not us", the gameplay is golden! Is this enough to win over the masses? We think so and here's why:

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Full

As we've said the story is absolutely bonkers, calling it strange or weird is a huge understatement, however it still had us interested in what was going to happen next and was overall, extremely enjoyable albeit in the same way we'd imagine a psychedelic hallucination would be like. Regardless it's fun so just enjoy the craziness! The gameplay is top-notch and we dare say it's the closest thing to a perfect dungeon crawling JRPG that we've ever played.

The gameplay progression flows in typical dungeon crawling fashion with a few twists here and there. Basically you must search the dungeons to find a certain something to destroy to weaken the normally immortal nightmares, which are the bosses of the various dungeons, head back to the Liberated Zone "safe area/town" and prepare for the next dungeon. There are also plenty of classes and skill trees that you'd expect from a game in the dungeon crawling sub-genre of JRPG's, but what IS unique about Mary Skelter: Nightmares is the Blood System. The horoins of the game can power up during battle by accumulating blood spatter from fallen enemies. Once enough splattered blood accumulates the maiden will enter Massacre Mode which not only strengthens her, but also gives her access to ultra powerful skills that she can't use in her normal state.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Full

Massacre Mode is a double-edged sword however as the more damage a maiden takes during battle the more corruption she will build up and if corruption is left unchecked the maiden will enter her psychotic "Skelter Mode". In this state she'll murder friends and foes alike. To prevent this you must use the hero's Mary Gun to splatter his unique blood on the maidens to cure their corruption.

Other gameplay elements include guild quests and even decorating the various maiden's rooms as well as bonding with them. The controls in the game are quite intuitive and easy to learn especially on the PSTV which is always a good thing in our opinions! In-terms of difficulty Mary Skelter: Nightmares starts off relatively easy, but becomes tough as nails really early on so expect a fierce amount of challenge from this incredibly thrilling game!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Full

Visually the game looks incredible with gorgeous character models, and creepy as heck dungeon designs that might give some of you nightmares. The special effects are also nice to look at as well. As for the soundtrack it's fantastic and fits the game perfectly.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Full

Bottom-Line:

With excellent gameplay and flawless controls, Mary Skelter: Nightmares will have you hooked immediately and the bizarre yet highly enjoyable story and top-notch audio-visual presentation will keep you coming back for more! Mary Skelter: Nightmares is one of the absolute best dungeon crawlers we've ever experienced and as such we highly recommend the game to any and all fans of the genre!

Review: Antiquia Lost (Vita PSN)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Half Slime Heroin Ahoy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 AntiquiaLost5

Developed by Exe-Create and published by KEMCO, Antiquia Lost is a 16-bit JRPG with a glossy coat of HD paint and is a blast to play! Is this enough to make Antiquia Lost a worthwhile purchase for you Vita/PSTV? We think so and here's why!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 AntiquiaLost3

The story of the game revolves around the protagonist who's basically human, a half-slime girl who has a gem-eating fettish, a full-fledged slime lady who's a soldier and gets lost comically easy, and a super strong cat-person who's on in years, but wise. The story is quite comical to be honest though it does have darker moments it never tries to take itself too seriously which is a nice change of pace from most modern RPG's.

The gameplay is fairly straightforward, with a few twists such as growing fruits from seeds to boost stats and feeding gems to a certain character to raise her stat and level her up. Everything else from the turn-based battles to the other nuances such as transportation is all typical RPG-fare, which isn't a bad thing at all in our honest opinions.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 AntiquiaLost7

The controls are easy to learn as expected from a retro-inspired JRPG which is good. The difficulty on the other-hand is way too easy for a large portion of the game thanks to the premium shop that can be accessed early on to possibly obtain extremely overpowered equipment. Antiquia Lost is also PSTV compatible which is great for players who enjoy gaming on the big-screen.

The audio-visual presentation is decent enough, the graphics are 16-bit and clearly inspired by retro games, but the art-direction isn't quite as authentic as previous KEMCO releases which is a shame, but it still looks good. The soundtrack has a few superb tracks, but for the most part is highly forgettable.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 AntiquiaLost1

Bottom-Line:

With a comical and highly enjoyable story, solid gameplay, and flawless controls Antiquia Lost for Vita/PSTV is an excellent throwback title that will remind players of a simpler more enjoyable era of the video game industry which is always a fantastic thing.

Unfortunately the premium shop that can be used for free in-game alchemy stones can break the balance of the game's difficulty and the visuals don't quite look as nice as KEMCO's previous 2D offerings and the soundtrack is rather hit-and-miss as well. Overall though, Antiquia Lost is a fun game that fans of retro RPG's should enjoy so we give the game a solid level of recommendation!

Review: Sword Art Online ~ Hollow Fragment (Vita Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Awesomeness of Aincrad Without The Possibility of Death!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2017-013

Developed by Aquaria Games and published by Bandai Namco, Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is the first of many JRPG's set in the world of the Sword Art Online anime series and it's a one-of-a-kind experience in many ways even when compared to other titles in the franchise! What makes this game so unique and amazing, you ask? Continue reading our review to find out the answer!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 2017-014

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is a simulated MMO set after the events of the first half of season one of the anime series and occurs in an alternate timeline as such there will be inconsistencies between the Sword Art Online games and the anime. That said the story feels very true to the source material with the characters personalities and mannerisms being faithfully represented in the game.

The game is separated into two sections, Aincrad and the Hollow Area. You start off by customizing your avatar's appearance and are suddenly transported to a mysterious Hollow Area. We'll get to that shortly, but in Aincrad you can shop at various cities and socialize with your female companions while trying to progress through the final 24 floors of the floating castle. In the Hollow Area things are a bit different as you must help a girl named Philia escape from the incredibly dangerous Hollow Area.

Other differences in the Hollow Area include the implement system where you can add new features to the game using the Cardinal System to test out unimplemented features that weren't ready for SAO's release as well as Hollow Missions which are used to unlock the implements and will test your skills as a beater!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

There's just so much to do in the game such as using the "good
" system to train the AI of your allies and if you're proficient enough to perfect the system you can unlock three bonus outfits for every major heroin in the game.  There are also tons of optional bosses, dating events, and sidequests in the game. There are also secret characters to be found in the hollow area as well as a permanent addition to your team who can be recruited if you finish the Hollow Area before clearing the 100th floor in Aincrad!

The basic flow in Aincrad is to work your way to the tower on each floor and then clear the dungeon located in the tower. Finally you must defeat the floor boss before moving on to the next floor. The Hollow Area works a little different and actually flows more like a traditional modern JRPG's world map with interconnected fields and dungeons. You must gather key items and then beateach region's boss before moving on to the next area.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is nearly 100 hours in length  not including alot of the side-content so expect the game to last you months from start to finish, especially if you want to earn the platinum trophy for the game. The game is also PSTV compatible which is fantastic for those of you who want to play the game on the big-screen!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

The game also features a new game plus which adds the ability to increase the levels of every monster in the game for added challenge! The game is easy enough for most players to beat relatively easy on the first playthrough, but increasing the levels of the enemies in the new game place will test even hardcore SAO players!

The controls are kind of hard to get used to as O is used as the confirmation button while X is used as the cancel button which is completely opposite of most games released in the US. Overall once you get used to the controls they're very good. A big flaw that the game has is its poor grammar. There are so many mistranslations in the game it's almost comical. Regardless it isn't completely illegible as you can easily guess what was actually supposed to be said in each scene, but it does hurt the game's overall score.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Visually the game looks incredible for a Vita game with gorgeous CG cut-scenes as well as visual novel style story-telling. The character and enemy models outside of the cut-scenes are great looking as well, though the environmental graphics are quite dated they're still pretty to look at.

The soundtrack as pretty good albeit somewhat forgettable, while the Japanese voice acting is fantastic. The only downside is that there isn't any option to use English voices in the game.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 900x

Bottom-Line:

With great gameplay, an excellent story, and fantastic visuals Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment is a superb game that any JRPG fan should enjoy, however a poor translation, confusing controls, and a forgettable soundtrack hold the game back from true greatness. Still at its $20 price on PSN it's well worth picking up. Anyways we give Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment a solid level of recommendation!

Review: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II (PS3 Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Riding The Trails of Awesomeness!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Trails10

Developed by Nihon Falcom Games and published by XSeed Games, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II picks up where the first Trails of Cold Steel game left off and is much quicker to pick up in-terms of action, but is that enough to make the game better than its predecessor? We think so and here's why!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Trails10

The story picks up shortly after the events at the end of the first game with the protagonist Rean being separated from the rest of his classmates. The story is actually much more fast-paced and dark than the original Trails of Cold Steel title, but does a great job throwing in some comedy and lighthearted shinanigans as well to balance things out!

The gameplay has been tweaked and modified a bit as well. Mech battles also play a bigger role in the game and the world is much more open than in the original ToCS title! Possibly the best aspect of Trails of Cold Steel 2 is the ability to travel across the world in an airship that you'll obtain in Chapter 2! Battle linking is still an important part of battles and you can now unleash a few new techniques further enhancing the series' already strategic battle system!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Trails11

The music is actually even better in this sequel than it was in volume one which is quite a hat trick given how absolutely sublime the music was in part one of The Trails of Cold Steel trilogy. Some old music tracks return, but there are plenty of new ones added that are just as good! There are also many more voiced cutscenes in this game than there were in Cold Steel one which is fantastic news and adds alot to the overall presentation of the game!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Trails12

Bottom-Line:

With excellent gameplay, a wonderful story, and a nearly flawless soundtrack, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel II is one of the best JRPG's available on PS3 and we highly recommend the game to all fans of the genre! We give this game a perfect score!

Steer Clear of This Fantasy...

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 885x10

Developed by Muteki Corporation and published by Choice Provisions Dragon Fantasy Book II: The Black Tome of Ice is the sequel to Dragon Fantasy Book I: The Volumes of Westeria which we thoroughly enjoyed in our Wii U and 3DS reviews of the game! Dragon Fantasy Book II is fantastic in theory, however many horrible bugs leave the game in a nearly unplayable state. Here's our opinions of the game.

Dragon Fantasy Book II is an action-rpg similar to Chrono Trigger in-terms of its mechanics, which would be good if not for major technical issues. First of all, during battles the game has a tendency to lag horribly which doesn't make much sense given the fact that the game could have run on a SNES given enough time and effort.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 885x11

The battles are fast-paced whin the game is functioning properly. You can befriend monsters and have them battle alongside you just like in the first game of the series. The game is quite easy at times and the controls are nearly flawless the latter of which might be the only strong-point that the game possesses. Now to the ugly truth of the matter. Dragon Fantasy Book II is broken, the game freezes frequently, the audio cuts in and out, visual distortions occur regularly, and so many buildings and locations are buggy beyond belief...

Several buildings have a bug that occurs when entered which freezes the game and wipes your save data. There are other bugs that occur during certain story missions when you die that respawn you in an area that prevents you from returning to where you were before forcing you to restart the game from the beginning. These bugs are among the worst we've ever seen and seriously hurt this game's overall score...

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 885x12

Visually the game looks gorgeously retro and the music is fantastic as well! In-terms of the audio-visual presentation Dragon Fantasy Book II: The Black Tome of Ice could easily be mistaken for a 16-bit era AAA JRPG except for the constant static and issues with the audio cutting out and minor visual distortions that occur throughout the game. Honestly this game would be 10/10 material if not for the horrific number of game-breaking bugs that this game possesses.

Bottom-Line:

With flawless controls, excellent gameplay, and a fantastic audio-visual presentation, Dragon Fantasy Book II: The Black Tome of Ice would be a nearly perfect game if not for the fact that nearly every aspect of the game is hampered by serious game-breaking bugs. The issues are so severe that we can't recommend the game to anyone as-is.

An Adventure To The Maxia!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 630x10

Developed by Tales Team and published by Bandai Namco, Tales of Xillia is a relatively recent title in the long-running and fairly popular Tales of series. While it doesn't quite live up to the high standards Tales of The Abyss and Tales of Vesperia set, it's still quite an enjoyable action JRPG!

The story is actually one of the strong points of Xillia with many excellent plot-twists and curveballs thrown you'll be left guessing what's next! The game also lets you choose your main character, each of the two characters has a slightly different story similar to how Star Ocean: The Second Story utilizes the very same feature!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 630x11

The game is fairly short by the series standards and can be beaten within 50-60 hours on your first playthrough. The game utilizes the same combat formula the Tales of series is famous for and tweaks it a bit with the link system and a skill tree to buildup your characters however you want to!

The game is fairly light on puzzle solving which depending on your personal tastes could be either a good or bad thing. An interesting new feature is that you actually have to level-up shops to get better prices and unlock new products by donating money and materials. Lastly the characters are extremely likeable in Tales of Xillia and character development is done right!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 630x12

Visually the game looks nice especially the animated cut-scenes, however the many fields and dungeons look too similar to one-another which feels rather lazy, though the main towns look nice. The ports also have the same problem with all of them looking identical to each other. The characters and enemies on the other hand are varied and look excellent. The soundtrack is also very well-done and fits the game quite well!

Bottom-Line:

With excellent gameplay, a great story, and a fantastic audio presentation, Tales of Xillia is a great PS3 action-rpg that fans of the series and genre should truly enjoy, however the lack of creativity in the games fields and dungeons really hold this game back on a visual standpoint, however we still highly recommend this game!

Price: $19.99.

News: Here's What's to Come for the Final Fantasy XV Season Pass...at least we think

Love it or Hate it Season Pass Mania Has Struck Again...

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 630x16

Hey there PlayStation gamers, Bre here with a second update of the night. Who here has played a Final Fantasy game? Who here is looking forward to the new season pass that has been announced? If so then this update is just for you, the reason release of news that Final Fantasy XV season pass there has been some speculation of what could come with it.

The sad part is Enix has gave us no information as to what is coming with it, or have they? Someone has translated the more detailed Japanese description of the season pass, and it’s given us some juicy details. The season pass will have six parts, and the six parts will be released in this order:

1. Booster Pack

2. Episode Gladiolus

3. Holiday Pack

4. Episode Ignis

5. Episode Prompto

6. Expansion Pack

While we can’t confirm what each of these shall bring it does seem there are some obvious things, such as Holiday Pack. There also seems to be an episode for each member of the Noctis party to come out with this season pass.

The one that seems the most meaty and important though is the Expansion Pack, but that’s just our theory. I think we’ve given you enough to think about, so time to just wait. Until next time, keep on gaming.

Review: Infinite Dunamis (3DS eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Infinitely Solid!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 300x10

We're huge JRPG buffs here at WiiWareWave so we always jump at the opportunity to review a new JRPG! Kemco are perhaps best known for being prolific contributors of the genre, especially on the 3DS eShop so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they've released yet another JRPG on Nintendo's aging handheld console. Does Infinite Dunamis live up to the solid to great standard of Kemco's other eShop offerings? We think so and here's why:

Infinite Dunamis possesses a steampunk-style world and story and is quite different in that regard to most of Kemco's other JRPG offerings. The battle system is fairly straightforward, however there are a few unique elements that make it feel a little more unique. The level of customization of Estelle, one of the main characters is definitely one of the highlights of the game.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 300x12

The controls are easy to learn and very intuitive which is always a good thing, in-terms of difficulty, the game is no cakewalk especially later on, but it's not overly difficult either so don't expect to get stuck too often. Visually the game looks decent enough, sure it's not going to win any awards in this regard, but it still looks nice for a budget title! The sound-track on the other hand is superb and fits the mood of the game quite nicely!

Bottom-Line:

With solid gameplay, a fairly unique steampunk story, excellent controls, and a well-balanced level of difficulty, Infinite Dunamis is a rather enjoyable JRPG that fans of the genre should thoroughly enjoy! The visuals are decent enough, but the sound-track is definitely the high-point of the game. If you're a fan of Japanese roleplaying games, you'll be right at home with Infinite Dunamis!

Price: $9.99/£9.99

E3: Nintendo Announced Ever Oasis For The 3DS During Today's Nintendo Treehouse Broadcast!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Build Your Own Oasis City!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Nintendo announced a new IP during their Nintendo Treehouse broadcast this morning! The first title in this new series is called Ever Oasis and it's a cutesy 3DS JRPG that has town building elements, crafting, and gorgeously chibi visuals! At first glance Ever Oasis looks like a family friendly Dark Cloud title which is definitely a good thing in our opinions! For those who don't know Dark Cloud was a JRPG created by Level-5 that was one of the best and most unique JRPG's released on the PS2 and was one of the best PS2 launch titles in our opinions.

In any event the game appears to be coming along quite nicely in its development! Be sure to check-out the trailer of the game above and feel free to leave us your thoughts in our comment section below!

Review: Bravely Second: End Layer (3DS Retail)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Brave Adventure!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 300x30

Developed by Square Enix and published by Nintendo, Bravely Second: End Layer is a massive JRPG for the 3DS and has had quite a bit of controversy regarding the censorship of the game in the west, but have these changes ruined the experience of the game? We don't think so and here's why:

Bravely Second: End Layer and its predecessor before it were a return to the roots of what made early Final Fantasy titles so great and are easily some of Square Enix's best efforts since the PSX era! The game picks up sometime after the ending of the original Bravely Default title in a world that is in the middle of huge changes. Most of the new job classes are given to you as you progress through the game's lengthy story, while the many returning job classes are earned through side-quests which is a great way to handle the job system in our opinions!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 300x33

The battle system has also been revamped from the first Bravely Default title with several new additions, such as Bravely Second which freezes time during battle, but can only be used once every 24 hours unless you purchase an SP potion using irl money. We aren't fond of that, however the game is easy enough if you're sufficiently leveled even without resorting to using Bravely Second, so we give the feature a free pass.

You can also summon friends' characters in battle to aid you in a pinch, these summons can, at times be extremely useful as you can summon friends who are at a much higher level than yourself early in the game which can allow you an optional free pass if you get stuck in a boss battle that you cannot win at your current level. The game itself isn't all that difficult as long as you aren't terribly under-leveled or facing a unique breed of monsters known as Ba'al's "more about that later" but it's incredibly lengthy and engaging with over 50 hours worth of gameplay and 30 unique job classes!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 300x31

There's a ton of optional features as well including toy making which can net you a ton of in-game currency later in the game, rebuilding the Lunar Base which unlocks new items and skills, and Ba'al busting which allows you to face unique bosses with a crazy amount of health in a lengthy survival battle. These Ba'al's can be weakened by attacking them with ships on the Lunar Base which takes quite a longtime, however the payoff is worth it in-terms of the monster's reduced health!

The game has been heavily censored in its Western release, however the core of the game is still intact and the main story is still mostly intact in its original form so despite our dislike of major changes occurring during localization, we feel that the game has NOT been changed to the point that it's harmful to the game itself.

The controls in Bravely Second: End Layer are flawless and easy as pie to learn which is always a positive for any game. Visually the game pushes the 3DS to its absolute limits with a gorgeous fully 3D world filled with incredibly detailed and intricate dungeons, and unique characters and enemies! The soundtrack is also among the best we've heard from a Square Enix title in years! What's even more impressive is the fact that the game is almost fully voiced so you'll feel like you're watching an anime series during all of the main story's cut-scenes which is quite a rare feature for a 3DS RPG!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 300x32

Bottom-Line:

With excellent gameplay and a fantastic story, Bravely Second: End Layer is a force to be reckoned with on the 3DS! That along with the flawless controls and top-notch audio-visual presentation make the game one of the best JRPG's currently available on the 3DS! The major censorship, while unnecessary and annoying in our opinions, has done very little to hurt the overall enjoyability of the game. Bravely Second: End Layer is a game that any JRPG fan who owns a 3DS, should purchase! As for us this game receives a nearly perfect level of recommendation!

Price: $39.99

Review: Justice Chronicles (3DS eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Solid Justice!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 N3ds_j10

Developed by Hit-Point Co. and published by Kemco Games, Justice Chronicles is a fairly unique JRPG that will likely entertain you for many hours, but how does it fare to the classics in the genre, such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc.? Continue reading our review to find out the answer to that important question!

The gameplay is quite enjoyable and pretty straightforward for a JRPG at first-glance, however the beast partner system really adds a unique spin to the formula. The game also possesses a fantastic crafting system and an incredibly unique dual-layered world that'll draw you in, as well as a captivating story that'll keep you coming back for more! The game is also quite lengthy with over 40 hours of gameplay plus plenty of side-quests so don't expect to beat this game in only a few days!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 N3ds_j11

The controls are very intuitive and easy to learn and the optional touch-screen features are a nice touch! The game can be quite difficult, especially during the second half of the game so be prepared for a serious challenge!

Visually the game looks decent enough, it won't blow you away, but it does have a nice art-direction and the world itself looks quite unique which is a definite positive. On the audio side of things, the game is good. The sound effects are pretty basic, but the soundtrack is very good. You won't find yourself humming any of tunes in the game, but we still enjoyed the music quite a bit!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 N3ds_j12

Bottom-Line:

With solid to great gameplay, flawless controls that are easy to learn, as well as fantastic features such as item crafting and the partner beast system Justice Chronicles is definitely worth its price especially for JRPG fans, it also has a fairly good audio-visual presentation which helps the game's overall score! So ultimately we give Justice Chronicles a very good level of recommendation!

WTF: Bravely Second's Western Release Will Have A Completely Linear Story...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Censorship Gone Wild...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Bravel10

Nintendo is no stranger to censorship, be it first party or third party titles, however Bravely Second's western release is the most radical and facepalm-worthy act of censorship that we have EVER seen in a video game in North America or Europe. Basically every decision you make in the western version of the game leads to the good outcome regardless of your choices in the game. This kind of censorship makes absolutely no sense and will likely destroy any chance the game had of selling well in the region, and frankly we can't blame the gamers for boycotting the game in this particular case as it is such an extreme and game-breaking level of censorship.

Anyways what do you all think about this massive change in the western release of Bravely Second? Will you still purchase the game or will you be boycotting it? As always be sure to let us know in our comment section below!

Review: Alphadia (3DS eShop)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Solid Energi!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 299110

Developed by ExeCreates and published by Kemco, Alphadia is the first title in the fairly popular Alphadia series which up until now has mostly been released on mobile devices with the exception of Alphadia Genesis which released on the Wii U eShop a couple of years ago! We gave Alphadia Genesis for the Wii U an excellent score in our review of the game which can be viewed by clicking on this link, but does Alphadia live up to the fairly high bar that Alphadia Genesis set? We don't feel it does, but it's still a solid game in our opinion and here's why:

In-terms of the story, everything's fairly simplistic in a retro-RPG sort of way and for the most part nothing will really surprise you as the plot-twists are relatively weak in this game, but that being said there's still alot of substance to the plot so it isn't all bad. Perhaps the fact that we played Alphadia Genesis first might have made us aware of plot-twists beforehand so it may not be the game's fault.

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Alphad11

The gameplay is fairly solid and feels like a classic SNES RPG such as Final Fantasy IV, V, or VI with excellent turn-based battles, a fairly large world map, and some devilishly lengthy and challenging dungeons. The battles start off way too easy for the first 10-15 hours of the game, but once you gain access to the ship things become incredibly difficult.

The game is also fairly lengthy and will likely provide newcomers with 30-40 hours of gameplay and can take upwards of 50 hours if you're a completionist!

Visually the game looks nice! The 16-bit graphics in battles, towns, dungeons, and the world map are excellent, while the hand-drawn anime-style cutscenes look superb. The special effects can look good at times, while at others they look fairly cheap. The sound effects in the game are decidedly retro and fit the game well while the soundtrack is fantastic and will really immerse you into the game!

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Alphad10

Bottom-Line:

With a good story that's fairly predictable if you've already played Alphadia Genesis for the Wii U, excellent gameplay with an unbalanced difficulty level, and a mostly superb audio-visual presentation, Alphadia is far from perfect, but is still a very solid title if you're a fan of JRPG's. And as such we give the game a solid level of recommendation!

Price: £8.99/€9.99/$9.99

Score: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆ 7.5/10

News: Action-RPG Sadame Should Be Hitting The North American And European 3DS eShops This Month!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Action-packed Insanity Coming Soon!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Topics tagged under jrpg on - Page 2 Origin10

The well known mid-sized developer Rising Star Games has confirmed that they will be localizing the 3DS action-RPG Sadame for the North American and European regions! Here's the official overview of the game:

Official Overview wrote:Translating simply as 'fate', four warriors are called to battle with a whirl of swords, spells and mysterious arcane abilities in this fast-paced hack-'n-slash adventure. Cut a swathe through waves of demons as you battle against the vivid backdrop of a reimagined Warring States period of Japan.

Players guide their chosen hero through dozens of stages, facing an onslaught of over twenty enormous bosses, collecting loot, enhancing their equipment and levelling up with new abilities with which to punish and slay Nobunaga's hordes.

Choose from the sword-wielding Samurai; the ranged and stealthy Ninja; the spell-slinging Monk or the enchanting witchery of the Rogue. Each of the four playable heroes has a distinct story and gameplay style with their own abilities and skills to explore and enhance.

However, as loot is shared between multiple save files and previously created heroes can be set to assist new ones in battle – not to mention the branching paths offered by the story – Sadame offers a huge amount of replay value.

Sadame is said to feature four characters that each have a completely unique fighting style as well as interesting use of the Streetpass feature! The game will be hitting the 3DS eShop in North America and Europe on February 25th!

Be sure to checkout the official trailer of the game and as always feel free to leave us your thoughts in our comments section below!
